MonitorCam is a motion detection program from Lightning Cube Software that can be used to easily set up an inexpensive home security system. By simply connecting a web camera to your computer and running MonitorCam, you can start monitoring your home, work area or computer. Whether to catch any thief trying to run away with your computer or simply to monitor when activity occurs in a part of your home, MonitorCam is the solution for you.
MonitorCam uses a webcamera connected to the USB port of your computer and performs motion detection on the captured video stream. You can configure MonitorCam to set its detection sensitivity level, to tell it what amount of motion should be considered to be an intrusion event and to generate alarms. MonitorCam has the ability to generate audible alarm sounds when significant motion is detected, to capture images on disc, and to send e-mail alerts with image attachments. In this way, even if in the worst case your computer gets stolen, you will have captured the entire event and have it sent to your email account.
Once a connection with the camera is established, MonitorCam will start streaming the video, which is shown in the window on the left hand side. The camera can be controlled by the buttons shown on the right hand side of the screen, just below the camera status indicator.
The pause and resume buttons are used to toggle on and off the video capture from the web camera.
Below it is the ‘Detect’ button which toggles on and off motion detection. By default, MonitorCam starts with motion detection enabled.
The next two buttons, ‘Video settings’ and ‘Properties’, will activate dialog boxes for changing the generic video settings of the web camera, for example, the image width and height and frame rate of the camera (frames per second). The properties that are displayed and which can be amended vary from camera to camera.
