Installing Fedora 11 Leonidas




Introduction :

Fedora ranks No.2 after Ubuntu in the race of Linux
Distributions. The Fedora project is sponsored by Novell. Fedora comes in two
desktop environment : KDE which was the native desktop environment and Gnome
which is default Desktop Environment now a days. The latest version of Fedora
12 which is still in Alpha stages and the latest stable version is Fedora 11.
In this tutorial we will install Fedora 11 on a computer.

Procedure :

First of all you need to change boot sequence from the BIOS
and set CD/DVD-RW as first boot device. Now boot insert Fedora 11 CD and boot
from CD. Once the Fedora CD is detected and you boot from it, you will get this
screen :

Now press any key to see what boot options do you get. You
will get this screen :

Now select Boot which is the first option and press Enter.
You will then get this screen :

This is a Fedora boot screen which indicates Fedora 11 is
loading. Now once fedora finishes loading essential system files, you will get
a GUI screen which will look like this :

The computer continues to start Fedora 11 in the live
environment, the amazing thing here to notice is the mouse animation. It really
catches the eye.  Now you will get this
screen :

Here you have to select the computer name that will recognize
your computer on  the network. Now you
will get to this screen :

Now the computer configures the system for the final time
before starting the live environment. Once it is loaded you will have this
screen :

This is how the Fedora 11 Desktop look like. Now once the desktop
is loaded, double click on ‘Install on Hard Drive’. Then you will get this
screen :

This screen with fedora logo indicates the start of
installation wizard for installing Fedora on your machine. Now click Next and
you will get to this screen :

Now on this screen you have to select the language for your keyboard
or the keyboard layout which you use on the computer you are installing Fedora.
Now you will have this screen :

Here type the computer name for your computer which will be
used to recognize your computer on the network. Now click next and this screen will
appear :

This is the world map showing different time zones. Click on
your region and you will get this screen :

Now this screen will zoom the region which you clicked on.
Select appropriate region which you reside on. You can also select your time
zone from the drop down menu on the bottom left side. Once you selected your
region, click next and you will get this screen :

On this screen you will be asked to type the root user
password. Remember this password as you will need this when installing new
softwares or performing administrative operations on your computer. Now click
next and you will have this screen :

On this screen you will have to select the hard disk if you
have multiple disks and the disk partition on which you want Fedora 11 to
install. Once you selected the partition scheme click next and this screen will
appear :

Here, confirm that you have selected the proper partition
and you want to proceed as once the partition is written to the hard disk you
cannot revert the changes. Now click on ‘Write changes to disk’ to start the
Fedora 11 installation :

This screen shows the installation process and till the
installation completes you can go and grab some coffee. Once the installation
finishes you will have this on your screen :

This screen congratulates you for successfully installing
Fedora and now you have to click on Close. Once you click on Close you will be returned
to the Fedora 11 Live Deskto. Here from the System Menu select shutdown :

Once you click on shutdown, you will have multiple option
which will let you select what operation you need to select. Here select reboot
and your system will reboot. Now you can remove the CD from the CDDVD-RW and
let the system boot from the hard disk. Once the system boots from fedora, it
will show you the Fedora 11 boot screen :

Once the system boots, you will get to this screen :

This is the wizard which will guide you for the rest of the
installation process which are pending. Now click Forward and you will have
this screen :

This screen shows you the license agreement which you need
to agree to. Once you take care of that click on Forward and you will reach
this screen :

Now on this screen you will have to configure user settings.
Type in your username, full name and password for your username. Once done with
that, click Forward and this screen will appear :

Here, configure time and date if it is not already
configured. Then click on Forward and you will have this screen :

Now on this screen, a hardware review of your computer will
be shown. You can read this if you want else click Finish. Once you click
finish you will have this windows :

Here if you want you can send your hardware details to
fedora developers. They may be able to help in case of a driver mismatch or if
you don’t have a driver for a specific hardware that you have. Here, I select ‘No,
do not send’. Then you will get this screen :

Here login screen for Fedora 11 will appear. Click on the
username that you created and this screen will appear :

In this screen type in the password that you created for
your username. When you typed the password, click on Log In. Then you will have
this screen :

This is the Fedora 11 Desktop and you have
installed Fedora 11 successfully on your computer. Go around and try out
different softwares and tools included with Fedora 11.
