Major LCD maker cuts prices by 15%

ONE OF the major Taiwanese manufacturers of TFT-LCD panels has cut prices by 15 per cent on 15-inch and 17-inch panels.

The Taiwan Economic News said that Chunghwa is also contemplating cutting production of LCD panels in September, depending on how the demand situation is.

That report said that Samsung, LG and AU Optronics have already cut capacity on products, following a slump in demand earlier this summer.

The report said that while Chunghwa normally ships 915,000 large panels a month, those volumes in July and during August are likely to be 10% less for each month.

It will use spare capacity to ramp up production of notebook PC panels, which, said the Economic News, amounts to around 150,000 panels a month for 15.4-inch notebooks.
