The Hi-Fi high-end equipment manufacturer Sonos comes with a little walk on the flat band of pioneers of the genre in revealing the Sonos ZonePlayer S5, "a wireless music system all-in-one controlled by the iPhone". The enclosure features an aesthetic close to the recent Bose SoundDock.
Like Bose SoundLink, the device can stream music stored on its local network, but this time it contains everything needed to access independently to a computer, a server to networked storage (NAS) or Internet wirelessly. The Sonos system can access iTunes shared libraries, to network shares or the famous music service Deezer, and broadcast the music of its choice on one or more chambers of the same household.
Acoustically, the Sonos ZonePlayer S5 has two tweeters, two midrange and a subwoofer powered individually by a digital amplifier whose power has not been specified.
The device uses an obscure proprietary wireless technology and requires another device Sonos (a ZonePlayer or ZoneBridge) to work wirelessly. An Ethernet connection allows to save the day otherwise.
The Sonos ZonePlayer S5 will be launched on 10 November for 400 euros. Watch the Sonos ZonePlayer S5 Video Demonstration.
