Skype would soon become open source

Onto his personal blog, the French developer Olivier Faurax explains the software VoIP Skype is becoming open source. While searching for a manager of Red Hat packages (RPMs) for Skype, Mr. Faurax received from the development team this answer: we are well aware that there is no version for Mandriva yet. We are pleased to inform you that Skype will join the open source community.



These remarks were confirmed again by adding that the publication of the code that should be done very soon. No date has yet been explicitly mentioned. This initiative will allow developers of various Linux community to develop specific versions optimized for each of the distributions of Linux.



One can however consider the components that will be published with the community. Indeed, the two founders of the software, Janus Friis and Niklas Zennstrom are currently in litigation against the investment firm Index Ventures. Having bought Skype in September 2005, Ebay wants to effect in complete resale software for $ 2.75 billion. Mr. Friis and Mr. Zennstrom explain their side that they have the rights to the Joltid technology inside the application and to make phone calls.
