Spot prices and OEM contract prices of dynamic random access memory (DRAM) are in freefall, according to market research firm iSuppli.

Analyst Nam Hyung Kim said that the phenomenon will continue throughout this quarter because of weak demand.

Prices are further expected to fall during the rest of 2004, but it's worrying for a couple of reasons. August is an important time for OEMs and system integrators as they prepare for the "back to school" rush.

Major DRAM manufacturers are also stepping up production of chips, at a time when the introduction of the Grantsdale chipset from Intel would be expected to give a boost to memory.
