Neterion, Inc., the industry leader in I/O Virtualization (IOV) and a leading supplier of 10GbE adapters, today announced at the Gartner Data Center Conference, that it’s X3120 dual port 10GbE network adapter is now generally available and in full production.
The X3120 is the first dual port 10GbE adapter that fully complies with the Single Root I/O Virtualization (SR-IOV) industry standard and the only IOV adapter that supports virtualization of I/O intensive applications on both legacy servers as well as future SR-IOV compliant systems. End-users deploying X3120 in their virtual environments enjoy networking performance comparable to dedicated servers, as well as guaranteed bandwidth and priority.
Each X3120 network adapter appears to a hypervisor as a large number of independent 10GbE PCIe adapters. Each of these "adapters" can be either used for para-virtualization, or assigned to specific Virtualized Machines (VM) for exclusive direct access. The VMs run the native X3120 device drivers with all the features and realizes the performance of the native networking stack, while the hypervisor retains migration capabilities and control over privileged operations for interfaces assigned to VMs. Even though each application sees its own independent adapter, the management paradigm remains unchanged, as major hypervisor features like migration and privileged operations are preserved.
"I/O intensive applications can now be run in a Virtual Machine environment without compromising throughput performance or latency," said Todd Oseth, President and Chief Executive Officer of Neterion. Oseth continued, "Neterion is the only company in the 10GbE network adapter space that is able to deliver hardware-level Service Level Agreements (SLAs) through our field proven IOQoS™ (I/O Quality of Service) technology. We dramatically increase server utilization without sacrificing performance." Until now, server virtualization was focused on virtualizing a large number of under utilized servers onto a single efficiently utilized physical server. However, I/O intensive applications could not be virtualized because the penalty in lost throughput performance and high latency was too high a cost to pay. The SR-IOV compliant X3120 provides equivalent 10GbE line rate throughput with low latency comparable to native (non-virtualized) systems. IT managers are now able to run I/O intensive applications in a virtualized environment achieving the agility and robustness that virtualization delivers.
The X3120 is available throughout North America via Neterion’s channel partners Info-x and Bell Micro. In addition, the X3120 is under evaluation by a number of major OEMs and large corporate end users.
