Samsung’s integrated touchscreen AMOLED could come attached to a new phone and herald a major change in displays, the company said Monday. The 3.3-inch, 800×480 "Super AMOLED" screen should be unveiled with a new device at next week’s Mobile World Congress. It’s not known how soon the phone would ship.
The screen itself is also poised to provide more than just a touchscreen woven into the surface. Samsung estimates that the screen is about five times "clearer" than regular OLEDs. It also reduces AMOLED’s characteristic weaknesses outdoors and should be about 20 percent more visible in direct sunlight.
No indications have been given as to whether Samsung will offer the display to others, although it has traditionally given its technology to others after using it for itself.
