AOL has bought mobile software company Wildseed for an undisclosed sum. At the same time, it has created a new unit for mobile services.
Wildseed makes Linux-based software for mobile devices and will become part of the newly created AOL Wireless unit. In addition to Wildseed, AOL Wireless will include Tegic Communications, which AOL bought in 1999 and which specialises in simplifying the entry of text into mobile devices.
AOL Wireless will also absorb AOL Mobile, which includes several AOL services for mobile devices, such as instant messaging, e-mail, photo storage, radio, search and mapping.
Wildseed is best known for its SmartSkin interactive accessories. Its Linux-based OS includes support for Game Boy-style games, MP3 and video and remote device management.
“Data-related mobile technologies are on the cusp of mainstream adoption,” explained AOL’s digitial services CTO John McKinley. “The wireless industry is focused on bringing additional rich media experiences and a new generation of interactive services to the mobile consumer, and we are committed to being a leader in that arena.”
AOL Wireless will be led by Craig Eisler. Wildseed employees and operations will be integrated into AOL’s offices and Wildseed CEO Eric Engstrom will become AOL Wireless’ senior vice president of wireless products.
