Sun readies Galaxy servers

EVERYONE SEEMS agreed that tomorrow Sun will introduce its so-called “Galaxy” servers, machines that use AMD’s Opteron.
These are Sun Fire machines and will use dual core Opterons but they are thin machines and the precursor of further machines from the big tin vendor, according to all accounts.

As such, they will line up against HP Opteron offerings and also machines from IBM, although Big Blue is reticent about making a big splash about X86 machines that are non-Intel, for reasons best known to itself. While Sun Microsystems is dead enthusiastic about Opterons and it has a strategic relationship with AMD, the Galaxy servers are likely to throw its relationships with other big tin vendors into sharp relief.
