NEC said it has released a blade server which uses two Itanium 2 chips in a single blade unit, and allows for a maximum of nine blades in a 10U unit.
The Express 5800/1020Ba uses the Linux operating system, supports 24GB of memory, and can deliver 6.4Gigaflop/s, claims NEC.
The unit also employs Infiniband but also supports Gigabit Ethernet.The unit wil start shipping in August, and includes redundant management modules, as well as Platform Computing’s LSF software to allow failover. The price of a standard blade is just over $17,000.
