First presented at the Consumer Electronics Show 2009, notebook HP Pavilion DV6 were introduced officially in the consumer range of Hewlett-Packard from the month of February with an average price of 799 euros.
From the start these mobile PCs are distinguished from competition for 16:9 screen and the good technical equipment, but it was necessary to wait for the first refresh till April to find some goodies to hardware. This second generation, called Pavilion DV6-1100 Compared to the previous DV6-1000 on a video segment is much better in performance, you will not get disappointed even in gaming activities particularly in heavy.
The high-end models are now using a powerful ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4650 which is also the most competitive Nvidia 9600M GT instead of the mediocre NVIDIA GeForce 9200M GS and GT 130M used on the rest of the lineup and Pavilion HDX.
The configurations range of less wealthy for HP Pavilion DV, however mounting a ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4530, A low-end graphics engine, which is still higher than the previous solution. With the refresh also introduced an AMD-based model and new decorations for the HP Imprint finish called Espresso and Moonlight.
Also HP announces the arrival of the third update of the Pavilion family of multimedia notebooks DV6, going to add up to 5 models of HP Pavilion DV6-1100 still for sale, including 4-based Intel Centrino 2 platform and one on AMD Puma. In entry level models are DV6-1110el (AMD Puma) and DV6-1120el (Intel Centrino 2). The DV6-1130el CPU T6400 fits exactly in the medium-low while the market DV6-1140el in the media. Finally DV6-1150el occupies the top segment with the adoption of powerful Intel Core 2 Duo T9550.
Espresso finish features a glossy black paint and a spiral motif, and Moonlight is a liquid ice crossed by a pattern with wavy lines. The first can be found on low-end models DV6-1110el and DV6-1120el as well as on DV6-1140el we tested, while the second is dedicated exclusively to the model of medium-low DV6-1130el and the top of the range DV6 -1150el.

Design and construction quality
The design of the HP Pavilion DV6 1140 with its rounded corners and its proportionate volumes, recalls the other models in the range Pavilion DV and complexity is particularly successful. Almost all surfaces of the chassis are enhanced by glossy finish of HP Imprint finish which besides protecting against scratches can also attract attention. The U.S. multinational has accustomed us to witness the introduction of new decorations and color of your molding technique fusion at each refresh of its line of laptop computers.
Decoration Espresso decorating the homes of our Pavilion DV6 is truly personal and elegant . Cover and base are covered with a thick black lacquer finish that incorporates a pattern composed of thin concentric lines interspersed with circular decorations.
The sides are lined with two chrome panels that continues even thinning along the edge. The base has some silver details, like the two buttons on the touchpad but most of its surface has the color of dark Espresso finish, even the keyboard is painted to match!
Details are finished with extreme precision, dense grid occupies a good part of the space that separates the base from the keyboard and houses inside the signed Altec Lansing speaker system, while the touch buttons are aligned along a bright bars. The whole structure conveys a discreet sense of solidity and quality. The HP logo on the lid of the notebook is illuminated as like the other Pavilion.
The optimal allocation of interfaces Firewire and eSATA are included. However, many users might prefer a larger number of USB ports on a product of this type.
At Front as usual HP are 3 audio jacks (1 input and 2 output for sharing music or movies with a friend without disturbing others) and the CIR infrared port to be used exclusively with the mini remote control. The activity LED have a classical position, so they are always perfectly visible to the panel closed.
On Right Side you will find the optical drive, two USB 2.0 ports, the port for Kensington Lock and entry to the feeder. We note that in our configuration are missing from the RJ-11 and RF-in for connecting a TV antenna. In fact DV6-1140el lacks internal analog tuner and modem .
On Left Side starting from the left you can see the video output to VGA, the Expansion Port to connect the HP Docking Station, RJ-45 Ethernet port, video output HDMI, eSATA port (which can be converted into a USB bought separately for adapters), USB 2.0, Firewire interface, the card slot ExpressCard 34 or 54mm and the slot for the memory card reader 5 in 1.
Processor, memory and performance
HP Pavilion DV6-1140el is based on Intel Centrino 2 platform, Consisting of an Intel Core 2 Duo Cantiga PM45 chipset and Wireless WiFi Link 5100AGN adapter. The motherboard is the production quantities and is marked by 3628 BIOS used.
The Intel Core 2 Duo P8600 is a Penryn-3M (Penryn new generation Centrino 2) able to exploit quad-pumped bus of the chipset to achieve a frequency of 2.4GHz, and with a L2 cache of 3 MB. Since this is a CPU Power Optimized Performance category, the maximum TDP of 25W, and then below the standard 35W processor generation Intel Centrino 2.
The strength of this CPU is its price / performance. so you can save on the final price of the notebook but providing sufficient performance for many different uses. The only limit is the quantity of 3 MB of second-level cache, so who need more computing power should focus on the optimal configuration above the HP Pavilion DV6-1150el with Intel Core 2 Duo T9550.
The system is capable of supporting quantities of RAM up to a maximum of 8 GB, but HP has decided to install 4 GB DDR2 for the 64-bit operating systems (the notebook comes with Windows Vista Home Premium SP1 32-bit). Slots available for memory expansion are two.
The fund is entrusted to an audio codec IDT 92HD75B3, previously seen on other notebooks like the HP Pavilion dv7. The output audio over HDMI is managed directly by the ATI video card instead.
The speakers have made a very good sound and they are made as always by the American Altec Lansing. The notebook also features SRS Premium Sound software that allows an increase in the sound hear up to 6 dB and provides virtual surround sound experience 5.1. A software that optimizes the audio output through complex algorithms to make it as perfect as possible for the characteristics of the human ear.
Also this time the connector S / PDIF has been combined with classic audio jack, so to make the connection you must set the corresponding option in the control panel audio.
Screen and video card
LP156WH1-TLA3 LG Philips LCD is the display used by DV6 Pavilion and is characterized by a diagonal 15.6 "WXGA HD with a resolution of 1366 x 768 pixels. The panel surface is treated with an HP BrightView glossy coating, benefit in home environment but subject to reflections pronounced in the case of strong ambient lighting. The aspect ratio of 16:9 and good viewing angles complete the experience, even if the use of an LED backlight would enable them to achieve autonomy certainly more satisfying.
The video card used on our HP Pavilion DV6 is as mentioned earlier, a ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4650 with 1 GB of GDDR3 dedicated video memory. Which is based on RV730 55nm GPU and compatible with DirectX 10.1
Very well made the Keyboard Solid and with a layout almost from desktop complete with dedicated keypad. Typing is very comfortable and the keys gives a nice feedback that will help you make it less painful typing.
To manage the various functions, multimedia the notebook is available with touchscreen multimedia HP Quick Launch Addition to common combinations with the key "Fn". A computer on the buttons will light a white light and when it is off again becoming completely invisible so as not to disturb.
The touchpad is quite accurate even if the selection keys do not seem particularly robust. Unfailing key off of the hot spot, such as requiring the highest standards of ergonomics that HP aims for its products.
Immediately above the screen is placed a 1.3 megapixel camera with two microphones integrated to perform audiovisual communications.
The Hard disk is 500 GB SATA II 5400rpm. This is a Toshiba MK5055GSX, which unfortunately proved to be a bit noisy in the early stages with temperatures still quite high. Performance within the average for a consumer notebook, but the speed when reading sometimes tends to have values a bit low.
The hard disk is protected by HP 3D DriveGuard that stops the activity on the disk if the accelerometer detects a fall or excessive stress. Very special design of the drawer where you installed the hard drive, which presents the four corners of the rubber spacers that probably are designed to absorb any vibrations from the case. The 5 in 1 card reader is compatible with the formats MemoryStick, MemoryStick Pro, SecureDigital (SD), MMC, xD.
The optical drive is a DVD burner GSA-T50L with support for DVD + R9: 6x, DVD-R9: 6x, DVD + RW: 8x/8x, DVD-RW: 8x/6x, DVD-RAM: 5x, DVD-ROM: 8x, CD: 24x/24x/24x DVD + RW / DVD-RW / DVD-RAM. The drive also has LightScribe technology to create labels on the back of CDs and DVDs
Battery and energy saving
HP Pavilion DV6-1140 has a 6-cell battery with a capacity of 55000 mWh who collects well in the bottom of the laptop. with Acrobat Reader about two and a half hours in battery can be considered a satisfactory result for a laptop with a 15.6 display, especially considering that for the screen on the highest level of gloss.
The scenario implies a very mild Reader machine, with the processor that is almost always in a state of idle. Use media, however results in a drop of about a half hour battery life. The only video card, it consumes 15-25 watts.
Temperature and noise
Dissipation of heat has never been the strong point of the HP Pavilion notebooks and also the DV6 not exempted from the rule. The relatively thin case are causing a stagnation of hot air generated quickly by hardware performance with the result of rather high temperatures in a state of stress and a cooling system is often overloaded.
During the game could also affect the high temperatures reached in the video card, so we recommend active cooling to avoid the thermal limit is reached.
The hard drive without having undergone any special stress has reached temperatures slightly below the critical limit of 50 degrees, although this should not cause particular problems. The dissipation system has periods of activity than regular but it is a bit noisy, especially when running applications particularly heavy.
HP Pavilion DV6 has the latest wired and wireless network interfaces which is a wireless card Intel WiFi Link 5100 is compatible with standard 802.11a/b/g/n also Gigabit Ethernet Realtek RTL8168C and an internal Bluetooth 2.0 module present. There is no internal 56K analog modem but the choice is acceptable since nearly all the territory is covered by an access to Internet broadband. Also connection to the Internet can be managed through the intuitive interface of HP Total Care Advisor.
The new ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4650 and the display from 15.6 " and 16:9 now represents one of the solutions with more attractive range of consumer, especially given the extremely competitive price. This notebook seems to be able to offer everything for the average user.
