LAVA Iris X1 Grand Review

LAVA Iris X1 Grand Review

LAVA came out with two new budget phone LAVA Iris X1 Grand and X1 Mini. We will be testing LAVA Iris X1 Grand today. It is an impressive model with many unique features. Overall after using for a week, we are able to find this as a value for money product. It comes with a 5-inch IPS display with quad core powered chipset. It runs on the latest Android 4.4.2 Kitkat operating system and in future Lava has promised to provide Android Lollipop update on the same. This might be one of the finest budget phone in the market to get Lollipop update. But with that hardware requirement also increases. Lollipop is usually designed to work on 64bit architecture and needs atleast 2GB of RAM.  So here I think if Lollipop update is provided on X1 Grand then it might face battery and performance issue due to Quad Core cpu, 1GB RAM and Mali-400 graphics. This is not the hardware really meant to run Lollipop OS. Still I hope in future LAVA might work on a more optimized version of Android Lollipop OS that does not hinder the device performance. There are two surprising part of this device.

The first one is its Intelligent Circa Case Flip Cover and the second one is its price. Intelligent Circa Case Flip Cover gives you a small circle window on the phone screen to operate it. That increases navigational features and it is included in the package. No need to buy that separately. The cost of LAVA Iris X1 Grand is around Rs.7349 as marked on the box. Some online website shows the cost around at Rs.7100. LAVA Iris X1 Grand is a mid range phone as per the features it offers. We will be checking out the same in more detail. Before that let's have a look on its detailed specification.

Package:

Design:

LAVA Iris X1 Grand is a big size phone. After adding the Intelligent Circa Case Flip Cover, it also gets a bit thicker. The device will still fit well in your pocket. It has quite a stylish look. The device not really looks like a budget phone from any angle. It comes in white, black and silver color. You cannot find the Intelligent Circa Case Flip Cover outside.

Front:

From the left at the front top lies a P/L sensor. Next to that lies the Receiver and next to that lies the front 2MP camera. Front camera quality is average. In dark it is hard to get clear pictures. Below that lies the 5MP IPS FWVGA screen. It offers you a maximum resolution of 854×480. Touch quality is impressive here. The screen also supports gestures called as Smart awake. There are set of different options in it which are easy to customize. For example, if you draw a small V on the screen you will get gallery. These settings can be modified from Settings > Smart awake. The screen also has a thin glass cover. It is not having a Gorilla Glass. But it adds a bit extra security on the touch. Like you can clean it very easily if you are not using a screen guard on the phone. The screen is easy to clean.

At the bottom there are three back lit keys. They are Menu, Home and Back key. Also, when you hold Home key for some seconds then it will show you all the apps running in the background with a Ram booster button. By tapping on Ram Booster you can turn off all the working applications.

Sides:

There is a thin metal rim on side that covers most of the left/right and top/bottom part. Volume rocker is placed on the left side. It is not easy to access if you are using flip cover. Power key is on the right side. The top part has the micro usb port and 3.5mm audio jack while microphone is at the bottom.

Back:

8MP camera is placed on the back with dual led flash just below it. This camera also has BSI 2 Sensor. The default camera app gives you most of the features to take nice pictures. I will not say that it has the best camera but good enough to take pictures and store memories. You can checkout more sample photos at the bottom. The speaker is at the center bottom.  Overall LAVA Iris X1 Grand is having a decent design. It looks quite rich with flip cover.

Intelligent Circa Case Flip Cover:

This is the unique feature of LAVA Iris X1 Grand and really hard to find in a budget mobile phone. Intelligent Circa Case Flip Cover gives you a small window on your screen to do the job more easily. This very much looks like a smart watch. This is one of the best thing on LAVA Iris X1 Grand. For example you can check your call logs, you have an active clock, and you can check miss calls, messages, play music and take pictures. With left swipe you can turn on an easy dialer. That has 5 options to use. They are camera, music, settings, call log and messages. There are minimum things here. You cannot go into your contacts, or type a message. You can just view it.

And you can make calls or end a call. Tiny music app lets you to change songs and play/pause it. You can use the camera app here to instantly take photo through back camera. Or just swipe to the right side to see recently taken pictures. Intelligent Circa Case Flip Cover is very impressive feature of LAVA Iris X1 Grand. It is quite better if there is more color choices.

UI:

LAVA Iris X1 Grand runs on Android 4.4.2 Kitkat operating system. And LAVA has promised to give Android Lollipop update also. But there is no clear news when it will be coming up. Most of the things are based on the stock rom. LAVA is not using any custom skin here. Performance is fine. You can remove a certain apps from it if you don't want the same. Quad core processor and 1GB RAM handles things very well on it. It is not freezing or lagging when you are using too many apps at the same time. As things are based on stock rom, you can make it look better by adding a third party launcher. Like Buzz launcher. Customization is not complicated. Just tap on the screen for few seconds and you will get options to change the background.

Camera:

Stock camera app does not bring any extra benefits but enough to click few images and share them. The photo quality is nice here but not very great. Being a budget phone it is not fair to expect much from the camera. LAVA Iris X1 Grand has dual camera. An 8MP BSI Sensor 2 camera sits on the back with dual led flash. Photos are great there if you take them properly. The auto focus part is not very great. If you shake your hand the images will get blurry. Images in sunlight are better.  Picture will be clear if light falls directly on it. Stock camera app is very limited. You can extend the usage by adding Camera360 or any better camera applications. In the stock app you get around 4 modes which are Panorama, Beauty, Live Photo and Normal Mode. Settings option also gives you all required stuff. Talking about the front camera, I am not impressed. It takes average pictures and sometime they are too dark.

Performance:

LAVA Iris X1 Grand is powered by a 1.3Ghz Quad Core MediaTek MT6582M CPU and 1GB RAM. To support graphics it has Mali-400 Gpu. For a mid range device this type of hardware is more than enough. Applications and games work well. HD games have poor support on the same. But games like Dead Trigger, Temple Run, Angry Birds, etc; works very well. LAVA Iris X1 Grand is ideal for social networking, chatting, web surfing, multimedia, etc. The screen quality is good enough to give you a smooth response. Touch response is also great here. The device also has a Mali400 gpu support. This is not a very high end graphics processor, but enough to run entry level games. With this the device comes with the latest Android 4.4.2 Kitkat OS out of the box. And soon it is also going to get Android Lollipop update. It would be worth to see how Lollipop is going to work. Performance wise it won't dissatisfy if you do not overload it with apps and games. It is great for a mid range usage.

You can frequently use application at the same time. This includes WhatsApp, Facebook, Twitter, etc. At the same time you can also play games like Candy Crush. But too much application can consume more RAM causing performance problem. Among 8GB storage users get around 5.93GB. You can extend the storage upto 32GB maximum through a SD Card.

For multimedia, 5-inch IPS display gives a decent resolution for HD video playback. The speaker is quite loud enough. The default headphone produces a good sound quality. It has a sound booster inside the audio settings. This can increase the volume and optimize your songs. But still loud volume is not good for your ears.

Battery:

LAVA Iris X1 Grand has a satisfying battery life. You have to charge the phone atleast once in a day if you are using it for chatting and web surfing. As per my experience when you turn on Location, the battery drains a bit faster. It can give you a regular usage of 8 to 9 hours if you turn off things like Gesture, Location, Wi-Fi/Bluetooth, etc. This device has a 2200mAH battery. LAVA Iris X1 Grand can give you a day long usage also. For those who will be using the device on 2G/3G can expect a battery life of 6 to 8 hours. And if you are travelling then it is better to take a power bank with you.

Conclusion:

LAVA Iris X1 Grand is a surprising model at a cost of Rs.7400. Beating other budget phones, this device came up with more uniqueness due to its Intelligent Circa Case Flip Cover. This is not just a cover, but something more than that. It gives you an active window where you can perform many regular tasks. Like picking a call or reading a sms. But internally you don't have any extra options to modify the settings of Flip Cover. It is quite limited but helpful. The device also runs on a good hardware, so that you don't really have to worry about app performance. Gaming is limited here. Camera is average. Performance wise, this phone can handle various apps and also fulfill your multimedia needs. We are hoping to get more features and more optimized app/battery performance after getting the Android Lollipop update on the same.

Pros:

  • Amazing Budget Phone
  • Smart flip cover
  • Good screen quality
  • Upgradeable to Android 5.0 Lollipop

Cons:

  • Average Camera
  • Not really for gaming
