Asus Eee PC 1005PE Netbook Review

Among the recent Eee PC from Asus, the 1005PE is a very nice little
10.1-inch notebook and well equipped.

With the release of Intel Atom N450, ASUS has unveiled various patterns
of netbooks among which are 1005PE. Embody challenging the high end
series of the 1005, this little PC in white and black clad equipment
looks very attractive on paper and its sale price does not exceed $ 450.

The family of Asus Eee PC grows continuously, especially when Intel
released new netbook platforms. After 1005P, it’s the 1005PE that just
swell the ranks of laptops economic of Taiwanese manufacturer.

Design

When we call Asus, who is the creator of the Eee PC, the entire wave
netbook sweeps in the market since two years now and it must lead or
build on good ideas from the competition. Seemingly crafted by nature
itself, the Eee PC Seashell draws its inspiration from seashells and its
opalescent and glossy exterior is crafted by the innovative in-Mold
Roller technology; matte painting in C part to create baby soft touch.

Thus, Asus 1005PE comes with 10.1-inch screen with 1024 x 600 pixels
screen resolution. The latest model from Samsung also has a feature of
this type and it is really appreciable. If you’re sitting in a cafe with
the laptop and the sun falls straight on the screen, you always see
something so bright with a slab, that’s weird. However, we can blame him
because of weaker brightness, measuring 127 cd/m2, that does not give
any benefit to the excellent contrast ratio of 1400:1.

We will move quickly on the processor that is none other than the Atom
N450 with his GMA 3150 integrated graphics, the 1 GB of DDR2 as usual
and the 250 GB of HDD – almost – standard on netbooks. It also comes
with an extra 500GB of online ASUS WebStorage which allows you to
access, share and back up your files and media no matter where you are,
through an easy-to-use drag-and-drop web-based interface. Note however
that compared to 1005P, the PE adopts not only a Gigabit Ethernet port,
but also a Wi-Fi module that supports the standard N. But there is no
Bluetooth. You can even find built-in 0.3 MP camera for instant video
conference & msn chatting in it. It’s so light and compact, you can
take it anywhere with you! And with sleek curves and smooth lines
hugging its lustrous shell, the Eee PC Seashell will easily charm
passers-by wherever it goes.

The Eee PC 1005PE is not only beauty outside with elegant seashell
design, but also matches with its power inside as energy efficiency.
Talking about the battery, its a traditional 6-cell. It features the new
power-saving Intel Atom N450 CPU, which works in tandem with ASUS
exclusive Super Hybrid Engine energy management technology to deliver 14
hours of battery life on a single charge. We were able to see almost
about five videos without any extra power supply needed. Pretty good!

A well thought out ergonomics

The Chiclet keyboard is really fun to hit and is a decent place on the
chassis. However, the touchpad, drawn in the palm rest, is characterized
by a grainy texture that catches the finger excessively and not really
comfortable. With the Multi-Touch gesture input feature, you can easily
zoom in and out to view photos or read documents by just moving two
fingertips apart or together on the touchpad. You can also
simultaneously slide two fingertips up or down the touchpad—making
scrolling in a window easy without the use of a mouse. Certainly, it is
very aesthetic and well incorporated into the shiny white plastic 1005PE
but beauty is, here, the enemy of practice.

Finish with the chassis, which is invariably close to that of Eee PC
1005HA: at the end, although a little thicker still. With a weight of
1.27 kg and its size reduced, 1005PE slips everywhere. However, we would
appreciate Asus to resume transformer sector format (adopted by Dell or
Acer) as well as small size, the model provided is a bit cumbersome and
involves a lots of cables!

A few Linux does not hurt

Along with, now common, Windows 7 Starter Edition for netbook, Asus has
also installed its operating system to boot faster: Express Gate. Based
on Linux, this interface is accessible by pressing the power button
located in the upper left of the keyboard. The Eee PC 1005PE offers
near-instant access to the Internet thanks to the inclusion of Express
Gate, an ancillary operating system that boots up in seconds. In nine
seconds (measured), you can surf the Internet, make Skype calls, surf
the web, chat, browse and store photos, play online games, and much more
with Express Gate! The best part is that this application is not really
power hungry. What delayed is returning to normal Windows mode which
took tens of minutes.

Conclusion

The Eee PC 1005PE from Asus is a very good netbook sold at $ 449.
Autonomy is just enough, nicely finished and ergonomics almost perfect
(except touchpad hardly feasible). We appreciated that the manufacturer
chooses a slab of screen, less restrictive than the models in bright
outdoor use.
