Olympus E-P1 Camera

 Introduction:

Olympus is working from 1959 where in 1963 the Pen F became popular camera for Pen series , few cameras with 35 mm half format (18×24 mm) with removable optics. E-P1 is a compact system camera. This is also Digital Pen an exceptionally small and lightweight camera system.

Main features:

  • Live MOS sensor stabilized at 17.3 × 13 mm and 12.3 million pixels
  • ISO Sensitivity  100 to 6400
  • Photos from the 4000 × 3000 pixels at 3 frames per second
  • Videos in 1280 × 720 pixels at 30 frames per second
  •  3-inch LCD 230 000 points
  • Storage on SD or SDHC card

Performance and Lens:
The original Pen was a masterpiece of compact design and superior ergonomics. The Olympus has managed to continue in the E-P1. Surely it lacks the camera’s optical SLR viewfinder which they had in the Pen F, but the digital technology provides an opportunity for live image on a large monitor. On the E-P1 there is a 3"(7.6 cm) LCD screen with 230,000 pixel. If you choose pancake lens M. Zuiko Digital 17 mm f/2.8 , it will follow with a loose optical viewfinder that you can attach the flash and default zoom of  M. Zuiko Digital 14-42 mm f / 3,5-5,6 (tilsv. 28-84 mm).

Like Olympus Pen, there is no built-in flash in the E-P1. Instead, they have optimized the camera’s signal so that it is possible to use light sensitivity up to ISO 6400. Moreover, a new flash for the camera, a FL-14 with the command number 14 (m, ISO 100).Internal E-P1 is built on the same foundation as a mirror reflecting the latest from Olympus, E-30 and E-620. This means that the image tag is a 12 MP Live MOS from Panasonic, with built-in image stabilizer.

It has the ability to record HD video in 720p quality with stereo sound. For this reason, Olympus has set itself a forced to change the storage media in the E-P1. While they have yet insist on its xD-Picture Card , the E-P1-suited to the more modern, faster and far more prevalent type of cards called as Secure Digital (SD). The SDHC card (with a higher capacity) can naturally be used.

Processor:
The processor in the E-P1 is a new TruePic V (with the ability to handle HD video), but seems to be programmed with the same algorithms for image processing such as E-30 and E-620. Among other things, the E-P1 has the good range of creative effects filters. which will be provided JPEG files, so if you also want raw original, you have to just combine JPEG and RAW.

Olympus will market its model range of Micro Four Thirds (MFT) lens-making as PEN. A handful of models are also under development for the launch this year and next, plus there are six or seven lenses in the plan for the same period. In addition, one can of course use the Panasonic lenses for the MFT, as well as regular Four Thirds optics and Olympus OM-optics via the adapter. Incidentally, Panasonic has announced an adapter for use of the Leica M and R-optics, and from independent producers are expected to adapt to Canon and Pentax in the near future.

Design:
The camera has top and bottom cover in aluminum, while the camera body is made of stainless steel. You can choose whether you want a natural-colored version or one that is painted in white. Standard Zoom also comes in two versions, silver or black. It has however a clever locking feature that makes it possible to compress the maximum length for transport.

The price of glory is a significant moment in the question about the E-P1 is a success or not. Olympus Norway suggests a  retail price of  around 6,500 dollars for the camera, with 7,500 million standard zoom 14-42 mm, 8,000 million with 17 mm f / 2.8 and 9.000 million in a double set of the two lenses.

Starting with the Live MOS sensor, it has the same as the mount of  Olympus Digital SLR E-30, dimensions  are far greater than that of sensors fitted to the compact space and a resolution of 12.3 megapixels. The conversion factor for the optics is 2x.Compared with the compactness, it  is the major advantage of interchangeable optical,

Art Filter:
Allow you to create special artistic effects directly into the camera. The Olympus E-P1 is the following Art Filter:

  • Pop Art:
accentuates the colors, making them stronger and more vibrant to create high-impact images that express the happiness and lightness of pop style art .
  • Soft Focus:
softens tones to give the images a dreamy and ethereal mood. The images appear to be immersed in an unearthly light, but without losing the details such as hair or the petals of flowers.
  • Pale Color & Light:
Similar to the techniques used for flashbacks in the film.
  • Light Tone
It provides a more intimate image, similar to shooting with artificial light.  shaded lights Areas and stronger are softened to create a sophisticated style.
  • Grainy Film:
This effect recreates the grainy images of the film in black and white with high contrast. The strong presence and dramatic atmosphere they pounce off the subject giving then an emotional charge.
  • Pin Hole:
Reduces the brightness in a device similar to images . It adds a unique color tone for a style that evokes the secrecy or the feeling of being lost in another dimension or space

e-Portrait :
Touches the face of the subject directly while running shooting. This function recognizes faces and automatically makes the skin of the face and the areas near the smooth, bright.

Shooting Format Multi-Aspect
The E-P1 offers the photographer a choice of four different formats that allow recovery and then the customization of each frame. Relations between the sides made available in this camera are: 16:9, 3:2, 4:3 and 6:6.

Multiple exposures
The function allows you to superimpose two RAW images  to create a new image while you shoot.you can however overlapped up to three images in RAW mode editing.

Speed

The Olympus E-P1 is able to trigger bursts of up to 3 frames per second, for upto 14 photos in a sequence of RAW format.

HD Video 720p
The new Micro Four Third Party is able to record HD video that is in high definition with a resolution of 1280×720 and a rate of 30 frames per second. The audio recored is stereo format . During the recording of video only digital stabilizer is available , not mechanical. The video function also  allows you to apply the Art Filter and also offers the ability to vary depth of field, angle of view and autofocus while recording. The movies can be recorded and played back in AVI format in both standard 4:3 and 16:9.The transfer and viewing of images on modern monitors are not a problem since the Olympus Pen E-P1 is HDMI compatible. It can take pictures in high resolution with only the touch of a button even while you are recording movies. The maximum duration of video is 5 minutes. It has HDMI port.

The Olympus E-P1 records pictures and video on SD and SDHC memory (there’s a classic slots for Olympus xD cards). A power supply is the rechargeable battery BLS-1 Lithium-Ion. The autonomy is about 300 shots per charge.

Supersonic Wave Filter

The E-P1 has an automatic system for cleaning the dust from the sensor. The Supersonic Wave Filter is a transparent filter is placed between the shutter and the camera’s sensor and that shakes the dust particles to yield a series of ultrasonic vibrations. Olympus was the first manufacturer to incorporate this means of protection from dust.

The two upgraded versions have the following features added:
Ability to edit pictures in RAW format from the E-P1. Ability to add Art-filter, for treatment rather than during recording. Improved application of e-Portrait and Beauty Fix with level adjustment.
