The platform allows developers to develop small applications (widgets) and import them into the Cobalt Box platform. Users can then decide whether they want to view these widgets as part of the webpage, move them or close them (depending on specific widget functionality).
The widgets themselves aim to create additional value for the user browsing experience by altering what up to now was considered read-only content. All widgets are added to the page inside clearly-marked cobalt boxes in order to differentiate themselves from normal page content. The Firefox plugin is shipped bundled together with the first Cobalt Box widget: Parallel Links. Parallel Links is aimed to serve as a proof of concept and an example of Cobalt Box’s potential. It analyses the current webpage and automatically draws links from popular websites (incl. Twitter, Wikipedia, Amazon, and others) that are directly relevant to the current webpage.
