Seagate sells its new Barracuda hard drive 2TB XT equipped with the new interface SATA 6 Gb / s.
The announcement of the release of this new drive coincides with the arrival of the first motherboards equipped with this controller SATA 6 Gb / s, as the Asus P7P55D which embeds a Marvell 88SE9123.
Our colleague has been testing this new hard drive in comparison with other solutions including a Western Digital Caviar Black 2TB HD, a WD VelociRaptor 300 GB disk SSD Intel X25-M G2 160GB The rest of the configuration included a motherboard Asus P7P55D Premium, 8GB Gskill DDR3-1600, HD5870 graphics card, power supply and Corsair 750HX Windows 7 x64 RTM to animate the whole.
The least we can say that the test results are mixed because we do not really perceive the contributions of this technology.
More broadly our colleague concludes that:
"Only when you copy files from one SSD to the Seagate Barracuda XT that we perceive a rate faster transfer rates with the chipset Marvell 9123 … The rest of the time we do not perceive the actual intake of SATA 6 Gb / s, the fault surely the speed still limited to 7200 rpm which means that the gains mainly from the increasing density of disk and cache. We will wait to see the performance of SATA 6 Gb / s on future SSD. "
The presence of a controller SATA 6 Gb / s on current motherboards is therefore now a need more marketing than real insurance increased performance …
