Both had base salaries of $591,667 in 2004, bonuses of $310,000. Last year they earned a base salary of $550,000 and had bonuses of $313,477. While they might be being paid the same, Gates earns a lot more thanks to the fact that he owns 10.09 per cent of Microsoft shares, while Ballmer owns a mere 3.78 per cent.
Gates was listed as the richest person in the world by Forbes magazine while Ballmer was only 19th.
