Asus Unlocks CPU Speed Limit

Motherboard manufacturer AsusTek Computer has introduced a utility, which promises to boost overall system performance. The company said that the CPU Lock Free will push the CPU to its limit.

The utility works by allowing users adjust CPU multiplier to 14x. The reduced multiplier value provides more flexibility for increasing external front side bus (FSB) frequency and raise memory bus bandwidth.

News source: Techtree.com Users tweak their systems either by increasing FSB frequency or CPU multiplier, which is usually locked for the Pentium 4 CPU when purchased of the shelf, greatly limiting your overclocking options.

By adjusting CPU multiplier from 18x to 14x, the system operates with FSB frequency up to 258 MHz and memory bandwidth of up to 10.98 GBps while CPU operation speed remained at 3.6 GHz.

The motherboards supporting CPU Lock Free are the P5 AD2 Premium and Deluxe, P5GD2 Premium and Deluxe, P5GD2 Pro, P5GD1 Pro, P5GDC Deluxe, P5GDC-V Deluxe, P5P800, P4C800-E Deluxe, P4P800-E Deluxe, P4P800 SE, P4P800-X and P4GD1.

The CPUs compatible with CPU Lock Free are Prescott LGA775, 800 MHz FSB, 3.2 GHz, 4.0 GHz+ and Prescott Socket 478 CPU, 800MHz FSB, 3.2GHz, 3.4GHz+.
