Samsung has developed a new 30nm green DDR3 DRAM technology that is the
industry’s first 30nm DRAM. The DRAM will operate on 1.5V and 1.35V for
DDR3 servers, desktops, and notebook computers.
Samsung reports that the 30nm
class process raises productivity by up to 60% over the 40nm DRAM. The
smaller build process also reduces power consumption by up to 30%
compared to a 50nm DRAM. The improved productivity of the new build
process will double the cost efficiency of DRAM compared to 50nm to
60nm processes.
The 2Gb DRAM will be used to create a 4GB module that will be
used in new generations of notebooks that consume only three watts of
power per hour. The new DRAM class is set for mass production in H2 of
2010.
