IBM readies mainframe encryption software

IBM next month plans to ship new software that lets users of its mainframe computers encrypt sensitive data, the company said. The IBM Encryption Facility product also can securely store data on portable storage media such as tapes, the company said. The product encrypts data using centralized key management, algorithms, access authentication, compression and high-speed encryption engines, IBM said.

The new product seeks to offer a solution to organizations grappling with new state laws that require consumer notification in case of a security breach or when storage media is lost. These laws often don’t require notification if data was encrypted. IBM Encryption Facility is set to be available for IBM’s z/OS mainframe operating system on Oct. 28.
