Samsung Develops World’s First Chip for DMB Phones

Samsung Electronics Co., the world’s largest maker of computer memory chips, said on Monday that it has developed a new chip for cell phones that will be used for land-based digital multimedia broadcasting (DMB) services.

The new chip, which the company claims is the world’s first, should benefit memory-intensive and high power-consumption applications in DMB phones, the company said in a statement.

The development is expected to pave the way for domestic service providers’ early commercialization of the terrestrial DMB service, according to the statement.The DMB service promises to allow users to view high picture-quality on-demand video channels through their mobile handsets.In February, Samsung Electronics developed a chip for cell phones that needed to subscribe to the DMB service via satellite.
