Radeon HD 5870 Eyefinity 6 Review

After a long wait, the first Radeon HD 5870 Edition EyeFinity6 finally
landed branded SAPPHIRE to start. As a reminder, only six outings mini
DisplayPort and 1024 GB of GDDR5 memory and more differentiated the
Radeon HD 5870 EyeFinity6 Edition of the Radeon HD 5870 reference. We
therefore find the Cypress chip operates at a frequency of 850 MHz, with
1600 stream processors and 80 texture units. The course everything is
compatible with Microsoft DirectX 11 API.

The Radeon HD 5870 Edition EyeFinity6  deal with a GeForce GTX 480
consumes more and more certainly be less discrete, but has the advantage
of being 20% faster than the ATI in average. Something to think about
more than one port monitors with DisplayPort are few, while for others
it will be imperative to use a DisplayPort adapter / DVI active. This
may add further order.

Experience the power of 6 with ATI Radeon HD 5870 Eyefinity 6 Edition
graphics. Equipped with 2GB of GDDR5 memory, the ATI Radeon HD 5870
Eyefinity 6 is the first graphics card capable of rendering up to 1
billion pixels per second in today’s titles, unleashing PC game
environments of unprecedented size and resolution.  Imagine a set of
graphics cards so powerful that raw performance no longer represent
anything, no game is an obstacle. Imagine a series of graphics cards so
powerful that 3D is a drop in the ocean of possibilities offered by the
new Radeon HD 5870.

The Radeon HD 5870 is so powerful that it is the very first consumer
graphics cards to offer the public management of 3D scenes on 6
screens.  With the ATI Eyefinity the image is not stretched across three
screens, but rather calculated in real time to improve your vision
dramatically! The effect is unbelievable that this is in the simulations
car, shooting games to first person or flight simulation. As for games
of strategy will be sure your advantage through an enhanced visibility
of the battlefield.

The power of the Radeon HD 5870 is such that it can be much more than
just graphics cards. ATI Stream transforms indeed your Radeon HD 5870 in
real computing unit. His language CL Open, open community allows you to
benefit from frequent updates and improvements. You can enjoy the power
of your graphics card to encode videos or make complex 3D rendering
much faster.

Eyefinity 6 Edition :

The Radeon HD 5870 Eyefinity 6 Edition is the first graphics card
capable of handling up to six screens on a mini DisplayPort interface to
satisfy players looking for strong sensations. True to its partner ATI,
Sapphire provides with fanfare a graphics card that will run a lot of
ink – and especially twinkle many pixels! The Radeon HD 5870 Eyefinity 6
Edition is indeed capable of displaying a monstrous six-definition
screens simultaneously. Each of them can reach a maximum resolution of 2
560 x 1 600 pixels with a DisplayPort interface, or 15 360 x 1 600
pixels if the screens are arranged in a single line or 7680 x 3200
pixels for two rows of three screens . In one case as in the other, we
are talking about an image of some 24.58 Mega Pixel.

Playing on a giant screen

The Radeon HD 5870 Eyefinity 6 Edition is equipped with six
mini-DisplayPort video outputs. It will therefore have screens or even
compatible DisplayPort to HDMI adapter. Note that it is impossible to
climb to 2 560 x 1 600 pixels HDMI, a definition that only the bandwidth
of DisplayPort can support 60-Hz To collect such an image in memory,
the card is equipped with 2 GB of GDDR5 RAM, and it will be advisable to
activate antialiasing filters if you want to keep good performance.

Several possible arrangements

The configuration interface does not display a single image on six
screens. It is possible to divide them into several groups. Two major
and four assistants, for example. What content as professionals wishing
to organize their work space as they please. Unsurprisingly, this
graphics card high-end displays a rate to match its performance: EUR
489, street price, with two cables mini DisplayPort to DisplayPort, a
mini-DisplayPort to HDMI adapter and a mini DisplayPort to DVI. It will
then buy other cables if you want to connect six monitors. And, of
course, buy these monitors.

Performance –

Side characteristics, we find the same as a standard HD 5870, except in
memory, with 2 GB of GDDR-5 is located on the PCB, against half earlier.
A key point for performance in high resolution, as indicated by AMD in
its presentation. The manufacturer also says that it is possible to
reach at least 30 fps on all games, not really specify the settings
used.  Of course the CrossFire is here advised to have more performance.
It will be interesting to see what is available for HD 5970 XFX
Eyefinity 6 , with 4 GB of GDDR-5 on this point.

With the HD 5870 Eyefinity 6 is the simultaneous use of up to 6 screens
are possible. Essentially correspond to the technical data which the
Radeon HD 5870th this will find all the necessary connections Square,
the usual configuration for 6 mini-display port connectors were
replaced. As previously screens with a mini-display port connector are
rarely encountered, puts AMD in five Adapter: twice each MiniDP to DP
and DVI (single link) and once to HDMI. The maximum resolution is said
to be 6 x 2560 x1600.

Order to fit all data in the frame buffer, this was doubled to 2 GB. AMD
is counting on the Clamshell Mode (x16 mode). The Standard – x32 mode,
each of the four controllers, two 64-bit GDDR5 controlling modules. In
clamshell mode can, however, each controller controlling 4 chips. The
additional chips on the back of the PCB into place. This increases the
power consumption but also the graphics card to 34 watts (+7) in idle
and 228 watts (+40!) TDP.

Connectivity :

As we already mentioned, AMD said that the bundle of cards will be
filled with all kinds of connectors.  For its part, Sapphire, which
should be among the first to offer cards in France, confirms the
presence of a connector of each type in its bundle, three in total. We
try to find out more during the day.  A solution should not be
sufficient for users to really enjoy six screens, with very few come
with connectors Type Mini-DP.

It will therefore play with different connectivity offered by its
adapters, and forget 2560×1600 (most of them are not provided for this)
… and then prepare for an added expense. The availability should, of
course, be quite low because as for the GTX 400, there is no question of
a few hundred pieces in the best case. A significant additional cost
but that seems reasonable, especially as it will be nothing compared to
what it will spend to have six screens compatible with this card, and
their potential foot.

The ATI Radeon HD 5870 Eyefinity 6 Edition incorporates the architecture
of its big sister the Radeon HD 5870. The GPU at 850 MHz with 1 600
units while calculating the amount of memory shows 2 GB of GDDR5 to 1
200 MHz to cope with a very high definition. The reference model equips
six mini DisplayPort output format. The bundle includes two DisplayPort
adapters, two DVI (liabilities) and an adapter to HDMI (liabilities). At
the first tests of AMD, the power of the card seems just enough for
thirty frames per second in games like Crysis, Modern Warfare 2 Dirt or 2
with the use of 6 screens Full HD ( 1920 x 1080 pixels) simultaneously.

System Requirements :

  • PCI Express based PC is required with one X16 lane graphics slot
    available on the motherboard
  • 600 Watt or greater power supply is recommended with one 75W 6-pin
and one 150W 8-pin PCI Express power connector required (900 Watt and 2
6-pin and 2 8-pin connectors for ATI CrossFireX technology in dual mode)
  • Certified power supplies are recommended. Refer to
http://ati.amd.com/certifiedPSU for a list of Certified products
  • Minimum 1GB of system memory
  • Installation software requires CD-ROM drive
  • DVD playback requires DVD drive
  • Blu-ray playback requires Blu-ray drive
  • For an ATI CrossFireX system, a second ATI Radeon HD 5870 Eyefinity
6 Edition graphics card, an ATI CrossFireX Ready motherboard and one
ATI CrossFireX Bridge Interconnect cable per graphics card (included)
    are required

Conclusion:

The ATI Radeon HD 5870 Eyefinity 6th Edition uses what is now the
world’s most powerful graphics processor, which allows you to completely
revolutionize the viewing experience on PC. The 6 independent video
controllers allow you to use each of the 6 display its settings, or come
in the various screens in a ‘single video wall.  Thanks to 5 adapters, 2
mini DisplayPort to DisplayPort, Mini DisplayPort Passive 2 DVI
dongles, and 1 mini DisplayPort dongles passive HDMI is compatible with
any type of screen, and 2 GB DDR5 allow high frame rates in games based
on DirectX 11.

Compared to the Radeon HD 5870 was in the "Eyefinity 6 edition" of the
video memory of 1 GB increased to 2 to cope better with higher
resolutions to. For the new model has six ports Mini DisplayPort to
control up to six monitors simultaneously from. The maximum resolution
of 2560×1600 per connection is what 30-inch monitor is one.  Not on
monitors DisplayPort (DP) need to be with order only to deliver the
video card manufacturer adapter with a few: In addition to two mini-DP
to DP adapter, two passive mini-DP to DVI adapter and a passive mini-DP
to HDMI adapter.

Hopefully other developers will follow this line, because playing on six
monitors – for those who can afford it in terms of costs but also of
physical space – is very rewarding to do well but we must monitor the
expenditure of even well-regarded for the Radeon HD 5870.

Important Notes :

  • ATI Eyefinity technology works with games that support non-standard
aspect ratios, which is required for panning across multiple displays.
To enable more than two displays, additional panels with native
DisplayPort connectors, and/or DisplayPort compliant active adapters to
convert your monitor’s native input to your cards DisplayPort or
    Mini-DisplayPort connector(s), are required.
  • ATI Eyefinity technology can support up to 6 displays using a
single enabled ATI Radeon graphics card with Windows Vista or Windows 7
operating systems – the number of displays may vary by board design and
you should confirm exact specifications with the applicable manufacturer
    before purchase.
  • Systems using multiple ATI Radeon graphics cards can support a
maximum of 8 displays (total across all cards in system) with a maximum 6
of those displays being used together in a display group (also known as
    a single large surface mode).
  • HD capable monitor required.
  • For maximum ATI Eyefinity support with ATI Radeon HD 5870 Eyefinity
6 Edition graphics and Windows 7, download the latest ATI Catalyst
    driver.
  • Requires application support for ATI Stream technology.
